Personal Statement

Most people on the Earth communicate by using verbal languages.  Graphic design, also known as visual communication, is another kind of language helping us correspond.  Through visual communication, graphic designers also hope to help to make the world a better place.

In the diploma and the BTEC course, I have mastered quite a number of things in designs.  They are the design principals, designing print work and developing my own personal style.  As my style goes on basic and simple, I usually use the basic design elements which forms my identity in design.  Afterwards, I apply them into different applications such as print advertisements.

During these years, I have participated in a number of exhibitions.  They helped me not only to let me show my work but to also let me receive more feedbacks from different people around the world, not only in school.  Through these feedbacks, I know what to improve when I have a chance to design a similar topic last time.

Setting up my own design studio is one of my ambition.  To fulfill it, I have set up a page on facebook and put some products for sale.  This is a bridge of telling people how I feel about this world by putting them into products with different varieties.

Chess is one of my favourite hobbies.  The Macau Chess Association is planning to expand to let people know more about it by setting up a facebook page.  I have volunteered to design a poster for them.  In the future, I will also design a website and organize an exhibition for them.

Through the final year of this bachelor course, I would like to learn more about critical thinking.  In my own perspective, critical thinking is a very important subject graphic design.  We can only make the world a better place by defining problems.  This makes graphic design more constructive.

Namecard design - Takkuan Design

Takkuan Design is a company mainly designing on fashionable items such as T-shirts.  To give a professional image to the clients, it has chosen to use black and white as the color scheme.  The dotted lines on the name card are actually the stitches of the clothes.

Simple Emotion - Anger, Sadness, Happiness

Mindmapping - brainstorming on life.
(Result: Targeting the topic on EMOTION)

Researching on different kinds of graphic t-shirts.
Idea Sketch - I have tried to think of different graphics to represent emotions.

T-shirt Preview - Anger, Sadness, Happiness

Facebook Page - It has been put on the facebook page that I have set up for sale.
Simple Emotion is composed of a set of three T-shirts named Anger, Sadness and Happiness.  The emotions are expressed with the hue shown in the graphics.  The original form of the graphics are buttons which are actually commonly found on clothing.

Typography

With the two words, addition and elimination, I tried to use the positive and negative space to show the meaning of the words.  In the word ‘elimination’, I dropped out the letter ‘T’ and let it fall down as rain.  While in the word ‘addition’, I gave a strong sense on the gradual change of the size of the alphabets.

Photography

Lotus is the flower representing Macau.  As a Macau resident, I try to take something which can represent Macau.

I have also taken a picture of a cat when I traveled to Antalya, Turkey in 2009.  Turkish trusts that cats can bring them good luck.  This is the reason why they keep cats every where.  This is one of them that I have taken in the hotel that I had lived in.

King Castling

This is a comic drawing illustrating on how the chess castled during ‘KING CASTLING’ in a chess game.

Life Updates

I have set up a blog to put my sketches, snapshots and some quotations that I find it useful for my future designs.
